Lip Reduction

A Better Lip Reduction Surgeon :

Some people have larger-than-average lips that overshadow the rest of their face. Lips that are too full can affect speech and even eating and drinking, which can make you extremely self-conscious. A lip reduction surgery creates a more attractive and proportionate lip structure., and it can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as rhinoplasty and chin augmentation or jaw augmentation with implants.

Ideal Candidates :

Persons born with lips that were too full,

people who have had botched lip augmentations with undesirable results from too much silicone,

Lips that are asymmetric or when the upper lip is much larger than the lower lip,

At First Consultation :

The first step is to discuss your concerns and goals with a qualified surgeon. It is important that you are upfront about your medical history during this visit, and that you provide a complete list of all medications and supplements you take on a regular basis.

You will talk about the various looks that can be achieved with lip reduction surgery and the amount of lip tissue that should be removed. Your surgeon will explain the techniques, incision placements, as well as the risks associated with lip reduction.

You will also discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used for your procedure, and where the surgery will be done. Most lip reduction procedures are performed under local or regional anesthesia, sometimes with oral sedation.

If you decide to book your surgery, you will have a chance to ask any follow-up questions during your preoperative appointment. Your surgeon will go over your instructions and tell you what you can expect during the recovery period.

The best way to maximize your results — and to minimize your risks — is to choose a qualified surgeon to perform your lip reduction surgery.

Procedure :

When marking the incision, placing the anterior aspect of the incision posterior to the lip seal and wet line is imperative. Avoid the area of Cupid’s bow as well. Cupid’s bow should always be preserved during correction of a prominent upper lip since it is an important landmark of the lip. The labial artery is typically not encountered.

The marking should be made prior to the use of local anesthetics, which tend to distort the lip architecture. With the patient upright, the amount of excision is estimated by pinching the mucosa until the desired vermilion show is obtained. The wedge-shaped excision removes mucosa, sub mucosa, sub mucosal glandular tissue, and occasionally, orbicularis muscle.

The incision lines should be wavy, and the design of the excision should not compromise the oral circumflex artery. The amount of excised tissue and the grade of planned inversion are determined individually for each case. While the incision remains stuck together, use resorb able 4.0 sutures to approximate lip tissues.
